Use your texts, clips and handouts provided, but also feel free to do some of your own research based on a country you are interested in.
Consider variables that can impact understanding prevalence:
- Culture/norms/role of enculturation/cultural dimension: is it acceptable culturally to report mental health struggles?
- Access to mental health care: depression can be under diagnosed if those suffering are unable to access mental health care or professional diagnosticians.
- Stigma: some fear how they may be treated if they are open about mental health; this affects if/when people reach out for help, and when people reach out, we get a wider view of prevalence.
- Diagnostic procedures themselves: are psychologists/psychiatrists reliable in their interpretation of symptoms? Are they 'right', meaning valid? Is bias at work in the diagnostic procedures?
- Gender differences in experiencing the disorder, or with reporting/seeking help
