Conformity
Conformity is defined as 'a type of social influence in which the individual changes their attitudes or behaviour to adhere to existing social norms' (Baron et al, 2008), as defined in our Pearson text. There is public and private conformity. One phenonemon related to conformity is bystanderism, when someone in a group may be less likely to help out an individual in that group, due to the presence and perceptions of others in the group. Watch the clip to learn more about this social phenomenon, and think about how cognition plays a role in whether or not we help each other.
